Sustainability

The RWDA and the communities draw contracts such as the one below to ensure the sustainability and good running of the hostels.

RWDA and Ilongero contract for secondary school hostel

There are three parties in this contract: RWDA (Rural Women Development Association), the Ilongero ward and the Ilongero community.

The aim of this contract is to have an agreement between the three parties concerning management of the project and its sustainability.

Management: RWDA is the manager of this project, so long as the hostel is being built. The costs for this project are shared between RWDA and the Ilongero community. Once the hostel is finished, the project will be handed over to the beneficiaries in the Ilongero ward, i.e. the girls that will live in the hostel and the Ilongero community.

Sustainability: the girls who will be allowed to stay in the hostel are the girls from the following villages: Madamigha, Mrama, Sekoture, Mwakiti, Itamka and Muhango. Each village will be allocated ten beds, 2-3 girls per form, so there won't be a school year and a form without a place for new girls. The cost per girl is $70 per school year to cover food and extra curricular activities plus another $10 per school year to go towards the cleaning and maintenance of the hostel and its environment. In total, each girl will have to pay $80 per school year.

          Staff requirements and job descriptions:

Chairperson-  will be a woman from the community and chosen by the community. She will make sure that the hostel is running well and is in good condition during and outside school terms. She will have to make sure all problems are being solved. She will be the one to make the final decision concerning everything: food, water, cleanliness, electricity and students wellfare. There will not be a distance between her and the students.

Matron/ secretary- will be a woman employed by the local government. Her job will be to make sure that all girls are healthy and are doing well in school; that day to day life concerning cleaning, eating, washing etc. run smoothly. She will be the one to write notes in the meetings and to notify the chairperson on any current problems. She will be the contact person between the students and the chairperson. She will have to make sure that there is enough food and will buy what ever is needed.

          Students' responsibilities:

Form one will be responsible for washing dishes.

Form two will be responsible for cleaning the toilets and showers.

Form three will be in charge of cooking.

The vegetable garden and the general environmental cleaning will be the responsibility of form four.

Each form will have a monthly rotating schedule that will be done by the matron and the chair person.

The hostel will have at least three committees, with four members representative from each form. The committees will be as followed: entertainment, food and health, accommodation and water.

Hostel Board: The hostel's board will consist of eight persons: a representative student from each form- four in total, the matron, the chairperson, a RWDA representative and a teacher from Ilungero secondary school that will act as a contact person. They will meet once a week to make sure that everything runs smoothly and that all problems are taken care of. The board will supervise all sells of fruits and vegetables and make sure that the money stays with the hostel and is being used for sustainability and entertainment costs.
